NASA lifts ban on Chinese scientists at Kepler conference

Amidst pressure from scientists internationally, NASA chief Charlie Borden reversed a decision to ban Chinese scientists from an international conference on space technology at NASA’s Ame’s facility in California from November 4-8. China’s space authority had accused NASA of politicizing the event, the Second Kepler Science Conference.

The decision to ban Chinese nationals came from a law passed in the United States banning the use of NASA funds for cooperation with China. Borden blamed lower NASA officials and extended the invitation to the Chinese scientists who were banned from the conference.

It remains to be seen whether Chinese scientists will be able to attend the conference with such late notice. The offices in the United States necessary for providing security checks on the Chinese nationals are closed due to the recent government shut down.
