Africa’s mobile-crazy tech sector has been heavily documented over the last few years, even by this magazine. Ben Chumo, Kenya Power’s managing director, said the power and energy company will establish a new system to send all bills and alerts directly through SMS and e-mail instead of the regular paper route. Although commonplace in the West, the e-forming of billing is revolutionary in the African landscape.

Chumo is projecting savings of more than $9 million USD every year, by minimizing expenditure of postage of more than two million bills sent monthly. Kenya Power is the first company in West Africa to go fully paperless — a landmark being applauded by ICT activists in the region.

The company said those who will receive alerts via SMS will not be charged.
