Lavabit and Silence Circle, the two email services which famously shut down their service following revelations of NSA’s Internet snooping, have formed an entity known cryptically as the “Dark Mail Alliance”.
The DMA’s aim is to provide a more secure email service than Silent Circle or Lavabit did previously using a new technology devised to automatically initiate peer-to-peer encryption using a protocol called SCIMP. The difference with traditional email techniques outside of email and attachment encryption, is that SCIMP goes even further and encrypts metadata.
Interestingly, the DMA is making the code completely open source and publicly viewable.
